Can't we have breakfast in bed?

Imagine traveling to a city and getting trapped in a hotel room where someone is constantly instructing you on what you can and cannot do. A couple experienced the exact feeling when they traveled from Sweden to Istanbul and checked into an Airbnb apartment. In a post on Reddit, this man, going by the moniker u/Responsible-Lack-285, shared how a note taped to their bed unraveled a series of shocking surprises for them as they moved around the Airbnb. Seeing the photos he shared, the internet can’t stop laughing and cooking up hilarious scenarios.
When they checked into the rental, they noticed a sign taped to the front board of the bed frame. Printed in bold, black letters on a white sheet of paper, the sign read “Use only to sleep/No other activities.” In the caption, the man expressed the feeling he got after noticing the bizarre message. "Came here with my wife,” he wrote, adding, “Oh well.” Irrespective of the disappointment the note left them with, the couple ensured they followed the strange instructions, as they revealed to Newsweek.

If it wasn’t enough to forbid the activities on the bed, the homeowner inadvertently extended similar prohibitions on other items as well. The rules didn’t stop in bed, but were punctuated across a sweeping series of objects. Take the television remote control, for instance. In a comment on the Reddit thread, the man shared another instruction they found on the TV remote: “Use only to turn the TV on/off.” To add more context to the rules, the Airbnb owner had even added a note that said the “neighbors are very sensitive to noise,” suggesting that guests remain as quiet as possible.
The drama didn’t stem from the rules themselves, but from the fact that the guests weren’t made aware of these rules before they booked the apartment. An Airbnb spokesperson shared with Newsweek that the ground rules require Airbnb hosts “to disclose applicable house rules before booking, so guests can make an informed decision about a space.” These surprises are probably one of the reasons why travelers still prefer hotels over Airbnbs.

In a 2023 report, market research company Savanta revealed the results of a study that found 68% of the respondents prefer to stay in hotels compared to 15% who choose Airbnb. Another report published in Tourism Management Perspectives states that trust issues between hosts and guests are one of the main reasons why more and more people are shunning Airbnb and opting for hotels. Negative experiences or inappropriate restrictions leave the guests frustrated, stressed, and devalued, leading to “co-destruction” of the services.

Meanwhile, responding to the post, Reddit users made up comedic and witty scenarios. “No breakfast in bed,” mused u/RainbowGames, while u/Kirla_ postulated, “There's definitely a story behind that." u/ret255 imagined a scene from Orwell’s novel, “Big Brother is watching you.” u/bluetortuga remarked, “I feel like this means they aren’t planning to wash the sheets.” Others speculated on hidden cameras and wondered how the sign could be taken as a forbidding of “activities” like reading a book, paying taxes, or even farting on the bed.
