An AI bot hired her. Taco Bell didn't. She found out on her first day

An AI bot told a job seeker named Abby she was hired, but the human managers had no intention of honoring it

A few things beat the high of nailing a job interview, especially when a follow-up call confirms the job is officially yours. You celebrate, fill out the onboarding details, and finally breathe easy. The next step for most is simply showing up to the job and starting to earn a living. However, this was not the case for a job seeker named Abby (@yappyabbyy). After her interview at a Taco Bell outlet, she received some shocking news, which she recently shared in a TikTok clip posted on July 2, 2026. The video has since garnered over 2.1 million views.

@yappyabbyy I just got kicked out and fired within the same two weeks and I think I had one thing to actually look forward too. Turns out I'd been waisting time whe I could've been out looking for other jobs. Idek what to do other than make a tiktok and hope it somehow blows up(it won't) and someone else magically is hiring in my area or something@tacobell ♬ Classic classical gymnopedie solo piano(1034554) - Lyrebirds music

A promising start

Abby's story began as she exited a Taco Bell after successfully completing a job interview. While she was already feeling quite confident about getting the job, her confidence doubled when she received a call from the company's AI recruitment bot, "Bella," who told her, "You're hired," locking in a July 1st start date and prompting her to submit her personal details online. Naturally, Abby thought that everything was in order for her to begin the job on that date. However, she had no idea of the shock that awaited her.

The silent week

With her completing her onboarding paperwork as prompted by the bot, Abby expected a quick check-in from the store to finalize her shift schedule. Instead, days rolled by in complete radio silence. As July 1 arrived and passed without a single word from the restaurant, her initial excitement started to turn into deep confusion. "It's July 1st, and you hear nothing," she said. This ultimately led her to visit the storefront in person the following day to find out what was actually happening behind the scenes.

A cowardly confrontation

When Abby walked into the restaurant to clarify her schedule, she was met with a bizarre display of corporate avoidance. Rather than addressing the situation face to face, the store manager reportedly hid in the back of the office, sending a lower-level supervisor out to deliver the crushing reality. The assistant manager then bluntly informed Abby about the situation. "So, you're not hired," he explained.

The employee further revealed that the confirmation from the AI bot was nothing more than a glitch in the automated system. Left standing in the lobby after having her expectations shattered, Abby simply replied, "Okay," and walked out. The humiliating experience left her asking, "Taco Bell, what the hell?"

Final disappointment

There are a lot of job seekers like Abby who have been hard done by AI recently. In fact, according to a survey conducted by Enhancv, about 50.5% of people confirmed being rejected without any communication from a human in the past year or so. Out of these, 63.8% believed that it was AI that made the decision. Regardless, only 9.7% were told that AI was being used to review their profile.

'Go file for unemployment'

That said, people were furious to hear this story and took to the comments to vent their frustrations. @potatonapper42069 commented, "Them saying “you’re hired” and giving you a start date is legally binding. You have just been fired for no reason. You can sue them for wrongful termination. At the very least, you can now file for unemployment." At the same time, @wolfshepherd6199 suggested, "You go file for unemployment. That was an offer. If your state turns you down for unemployment, you call an appointment at an attorney's office."
