'Do I quietly leave that roll out, or does my mom deserve to know?'

Digitizing an old box of film negatives often unlocks a trip down memory lane. But for a person (u/hot_challenge_2223), it turned into an unexpected family crisis. What began as an innocent trip down memory lane turned into a nightmare when they stumbled upon their father's romantic pictures with a mystery woman. On September 24, 2026, the author shared their story online, asking whether they should tell their mom about it.
I found something weird while scanning my late dad’s old film and I don’t know if I should tell my mom

After their father's death, their sister insisted they digitize a box of his old film negatives for their mom. "I bought a scanner and started going through them myself. Most of it is normal family stuff, vacations, birthdays, us as kids," the author said. Their plan to surprise their mom took an unexpected turn when a 2001 film strip appeared on the scanner.
"My parents had already been married for about 6 years at that point," the person remarked. They emphasized that during that time, their household was not only fully established with two kids but also seemingly doing great. Mixed among typical photographs from that era lay ten photographs detailing an intimate weekend escape, documenting their father with another woman. "Restaurant photos, hotel balcony, her wearing his jacket, one where they're kissing," they added. The author said they're unsure about how to respond. "Do I quietly leave that roll out, tell my sister first, or does my mom deserve to know what I found? I feel weird making the decision for her either way," the author added.

As surprising as it may sound, the majority of Americans are keeping secrets from their partners. A Lemonade survey found that nearly 26% of adults had kept a secret about their past relationship from their current partner. Meanwhile, 48% confessed to still having secrets that they haven't shared with their companion. What's interesting is that, out of these people 68%, did confess that they feel guilty about having to hide things from their partner.

Meanwhile, people in the comments feel the author should avoid telling their mom about it. For example, u/dsly4425 commented, "Leave that roll out unless anyone asks about it, expecting it to be there." Speaking in a similar tone, u/DayWorth3942 suggested, "Leave the rollout. Creating a gift for your mother is something beautiful that you’re creating in memory of your late Father. If it was me, I would take it to my grave." However, u/Sammmuela333 said, "I don’t get why anyone would ever want to live with a lie even if they like it more. I’d of course tell them it’s not my information to hide."
