Adopted at three months old in a closed adoption, they were not supposed to have contact with their birth parents until adulthood.
Some moments in life feel too wild to be real. The kind that seems plucked straight from a movie script yet somehow unfolds in the most ordinary places. One TikTok video recounting an unbelievable reunion story has left many in awe. Marielle Landry, an identical twin who was adopted as an infant, shared on her TikTok (@housecoatmommy) how she and her sister, Mireille, accidentally met their birth mother at a mall when they were 12. She explains that she and her sister were adopted at three months old in a closed adoption, meaning they wouldn’t have access to any information about their birth parents until they turned 18.
"That’s not how it worked out," Marielle says. "And we’ve had some very coincidental reunions ever since." At 12 years old, Marielle recalls that she and her sister had just finished a soccer game and gone to the mall with a friend in a city about an hour and a half from their hometown. While at a photo booth, they noticed an extra strip of pictures left behind. "We didn’t recognize the ladies. They looked to be about 25," Marielle says. "So we looked around, found them, and gave the pictures back." That seemed like the end of it until a little while later. "We see my mom talking to the same women, and we’re like, ‘Who are these women, and why does our mom know them?’" she continues. As they approached, their mother turned to them and dropped a life-changing revelation.
"Turns out it’s our birth mother and her sister," Marielle says. She also learned that she and her sister were actually named after the two women on their original birth certificate. And in a strange coincidence, Mireille was wearing the same shirt as their birth mother’s sister that day. "Our birth mother recognized us 12 years later," Marielle concludes. Many viewers were amazed by the revelation. @carla_c11 commented, "Amazing. You were supposed to meet." @sierral298 said, "Incredible that your BM recognized y’all." @shallow.9 wrote, "Of course she did, you were her miracles." @patata__life quipped, "What in the Sister, Sister!!! Amazing!"
Marielle also shared the story in an interview with TODAY. She explained that growing up, she and her sister had always wondered about their birth mom. "We both had so many questions," she said. "All we knew was that she was 15 when she had us." Nicole, their birth mother, had been receiving yearly photos of the twins through the adoption agency, so when she saw them in the mall that day, she immediately knew who they were. Marielle described the moment as overwhelming.
"It was such a surreal moment," she said. "Nicole asked us if we had any questions, but I couldn’t think clearly. I had so many, but I was in shock."
She learned that their biological father was living in Zambia, where he had moved back after playing university soccer in Canada. "Even though they were strangers, they felt so familiar," Marielle said. Since that unexpected mall encounter, Nicole has remained a part of their lives. Though their relationship isn’t a traditional mother-daughter bond, Marielle describes it as "close cousins." She and her sister also built connections with Nicole’s family, including her son. "We were raised by the most incredible parents. They're high school sweethearts, and, oh my God, they are amazing," Marielle shared. "But I am so glad the universe brought Nicole into our lives. It's definitely meant to be."
