It might shock the singer's fans that the most commonly known pronunciation of her name isn't right.
Getting someone's name wrong is not exactly an uncommon thing, especially if they belong to a different nationality. But after a person has been a popular public figure for more than a decade you would at least expect people to know the correct pronunciation of their name. However, many people would be surprised to learn that most people have been pronouncing Adele, the "Skyfall" singer's name wrong all along, the woman herself revealed in a 2022 “Happy Hour with Adele” Q&A session, per CNN.
During the session, Adele was promoting her music video for "I drink wine." In a clip shared by Billboard, a British fan from London who connected via video call asked the singer a question about her songwriting. The English singer-songwriter immediately pointed out, "I love that she said my name perfectly." The singer then gave the correct pronunciation of her name which is "Uh-dale" as against "Uh-dell" which people commonly use to refer to the singer. It is quite surprising to know that the singer who has won multiple prestigious awards including a Grammy for her work has been referred to with a wrong name by most people.
During the Happy Hour interview, Adele also shared how the concept of the music video for "I drink wine" was devised. She recounted how she told her manager that she wanted to connect with Director Joe Talbot for it. Soon enough the director and his partner and Adele and her partner went to Palm Springs at the singer's house there. "We just reminisced about our lives," the singer shared. They created a fantasy world and the director came up with the treatment of the music video. The "Rolling Deep" singer and the host discussed how the lazy river concept of the music video turned out to be quite brilliant.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the singer shared how the song was about shedding one's ego. “I took everything so personally at that period in my life. So the lyric ‘I hope I learn to get over myself’ is like [me saying] ‘Once I’ve done that, then maybe I can let you love me,'" she shared. “Words can’t explain how ecstatic I am to finally be able to announce these rescheduled shows. I truly was heartbroken to have to cancel them. However, after what feels like an eternity of figuring out logistics for the show that I want to deliver, and knowing it can happen, I’m more excited than ever!” the "Send My Love" singer expressed.
Adele has previously explained why character is more important than talent. The singer received the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at The Hollywood Reporter's 2023 Women in Entertainment Breakfast Gala and delivered a powerful speech about the importance of character afterward. "Talent can't decide how you treat people. Talent doesn't have a moral compass. Talent cannot read a room. You can be the most talented person on the planet and only make bad decisions," she pointed out during her speech. She continued, "Talent is random and one might know that they have a talent." On the other hand, "character is observed, it is witnessed, it is taught and it is passed down."
The songstress has learned the lesson from the women in her life that "character is their armor." The singer then told her fans, "But thanks to them, my character is my skin. I don't have stories about how my path to success was hard because it wasn't. I know that's rare and I know that I am lucky and that's because of you."
