Actor who met girlfriend while filming commercial uses the same ad to pull off Oscar-worthy proposal

Unlike in the past, when a man would ask a girl’s parents for her hand in marriage, today’s proposals are a blend of creativity and romance. Pulling off the perfect proposal takes thoughtful planning, often involving a place or moment that means the most to the couple. Time and again, we see boyfriends on the internet turning a simple yet significant question into an unforgettable experience for their girlfriends. In April, 35-year-old David Lautman pulled off an iconic proposal to his then-girlfriend, Megan Wang. Wang, 31—who goes by @meganliwang on TikTok—"accidentally" captured the moment on camera, and it quickly went viral.

In Wang's TikTok video, a commercial for a Lenovo laptop, in which she and Lautman starred together, is seen playing on the TV. Wang decided to film the ad because it was airing beyond its agreed period without compensating her. Little did she know that Lautman had planned a surprise extended version of the commercial just for her. After the actual ad ends, Lautman’s solo segment appears, where a voice asks if he has anything else to say. As he begins discussing more laptop features, the voice scolds him, "No, idiot, that's my line," and prompts him to address the woman sitting beside him.

At first, the actor on TV pretends to be clueless, then points to the "real-life" Lautman and says, "Maybe the future me has something he wants to say." The TV Lautman then tosses a ring box, which the real Lautman catches. At that moment, Wang realizes what's happening and bursts into laughter. The couple shared a hearty laugh before Lautman popped the "big" question. Wang happily accepted and showed off the "cat-inspired" ring he had chosen for her. Meanwhile, the actor in the commercial waited patiently for the proposal to unfold and gave a nod of approval at the end. It turns out Wang had two expectations if Lautman ever proposed—a cat-themed ring and a funny proposal—and he delivered both perfectly.

"If I'm not laughing, I might say no. It has to be really funny," she told TODAY. Lautman spent late nights editing the video after his girlfriend went to sleep to keep the surprise under wraps. "The second I 'caught' the ring box and turned around and proposed, I was shaking," he said about the unforgettable moment. The fun-loving couple actually met on the sets of the Lenovo commercial a couple of years ago. Their friendship gradually grew into love, and Lautman’s decision to use their old commercial for this important moment couldn’t have been more perfect.

The proposal video has garnered nearly 25 million views so far and people loved how creative and unserious it was. "You had us worried there for a second. A huge congrats to you both!" @lenovo quipped. "This is the most creative proposal and also the funniest that deserves an Oscar," said @owlwitches. "This is hands down the best proposal I've ever seen. Very thoughtful, funny, private and not awkward. Just perfect," lauded @zaynabnaim. "This is so cute and I love how you guys couldn't stop laughing. 'Yeah, sure,'" added @evadocoutokane.
