Couple complained about friend's 'expensive' wedding despite it being paid for — the bride and groom quietly uninvited them and kept the $1,200

The guests complained about everything — from how expensive and exhausting the celebrations would be to the dress code

Somewhere between the food, dance, invites, and photography, the bride and groom carry the immense burden of expenses and planning that often lightens once the celebration begins. But things went downhill for a couple (u/stellafromvienna) after one of their guest couples started throwing tantrums after responding to their wedding invitation. In a June 24, 2026, Reddit post, an individual shared they had to uninvite the troublesome guests, who were trying to use their wedding as an excuse for a free retreat. The post has received 12,000 upvotes.

RSVP drama hits peak

The bride and the groom sent out their wedding invites and waited for the guests to respond. Within a month, everyone responded except for one couple. "We really had to hound them to get any kind of answer from them," the author recalled. Eventually, the problematic couple did respond, saying they would attend the wedding, but complained about a million other things. Their first complaint was that attending the event would be expensive and exhausting. The response left the bride and groom gobsmacked, given that they were already spending 600 bucks per guest to cover their food, accommodation in a lakeside hotel, parking, and drinks. The guest couple also complained about the dress code, leaving the bride and groom speechless.

Frustrated, the bride and groom finally decided to uninvite the couple. "It's best if you don't come," they told them, saying they don't want to force the couple to attend the wedding. "They are now angry at us and refuse to speak to us, and we were thinking that maybe we were a bit harsh," the author said.

Wedding expenses

Sometimes, attending weddings can be expensive for guests. In fact, a Lending Tree survey of over 2,000 Americans found that 31% of guests have taken on debt to attend a wedding. Among those who landed in debt, 37% said their family pressured them, while 28% reported feeling pressured by the bride and groom to overspend at the wedding. In general, a majority of respondents (87%) felt pressured to spend more than they should, regardless of the source. Now, in the Reddit post, considering that the bride and groom were already paying for most of the expenses, the couple's unsolicited attitude sounds too entitled to ignore.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit post, u/mercymercybothhands commented, “This is genius. I assumed they were just those types of people who want to crap all over people’s joy, but I bet you are absolutely right. They were planning a little vacation and trying to prep you for not questioning their absence if they didn’t show up!” u/frostynugget43 said, “Well said, OP's mental energy is better spent on people who actually want to celebrate with them, they complained about everything OP is covering for free, their anger is just them realizing their complaints didn't get them anywhere.”
