An 8-year-old, Phoenix, from Manchester is making rounds on the internet for a kind act that saved a Jet2 flight from diverting its course. On May 3, 2026, Phoenix and his dad, James, were returning home from a holiday in Turkey because of a family emergency, as reported by Belfast Live. An unruly drunk passenger's antics, a few rows down from the father and son, made the pilot start turning the plane around. That's when James and Phoenix decided to take matters into their own hands.

A rowdy passenger

James spoke to The Mirror about how things escalated on the plane. The woman, he said, had been drinking from her own bottle of whiskey even before flight boarding had begun. To his dismay, she had continued this behavior after the flight took off, secretly drinking in her seat. 30 minutes after they were in the air, "The first drink service came round and all of a sudden it just erupted, and she'd been drinking her own whiskey," James revealed. The flight attendants informed her that it was not allowed, which aggravated her. They took her drink away, and she "started throwing her hands about, swearing, effing and jeffing, really being irate." There were many children on the flight, but the drunk woman did not seem to care and allegedly yelled abuses at the staff.

An 8-year-old's solution

Exasperated by her actions, one stewardess announced, "That's it, we're gonna call the pilot and get this plane diverted." James immediately pleaded for a 30-second chance to see if he could make a difference. The father-son duo couldn't afford a delay so they asked that the unruly passenger be seated between him and his son, Phoenix. That's when the young boy surprised him by taking "all the control. Phoenix, he got his cards out, he started singing to her this Dance Monkey song," James said. For the rest of the 3-hour flight, Phoenix kept her busy with his company. He told her about his love for football, his YouTube channel, and asked about her family. He even said, "Listen, you don't want to get arrested when you get there, tell me about your kids."

Not a one-off gesture

James praised his son's kind heart and shared another incident where he felt the need to help other people. "He's just a naturally nice kid who is polite, who helps anyone, anyone he can." One time, they were at a local Tesco to get Phoenix a drink, and he saw a homeless person. He asked his dad to give the man some money, to which James responded, "I've only got notes, mate," to which Phoenix replied, "Well, give him a fiver then." James concluded, "That's Phoenix in a nutshell. He'd do anything for anyone." As a thank-you for calming the passenger, a Jet2 spokesperson said, "We are arranging for a goodie pack to be sent to them, alongside a voucher for a pair of free flights, in recognition of what they did."

Passenger pet peeves

The majority of passengers on a plane want a relaxing flight, whether short or long, before they touchdown, but things don't always go as planned. Not every passenger follows plane etiquette. Airplane Etiquette Violations Survey asked 1,908 Americans over the age of 18 about the most annoying things while on a plane. The survey revealed that 59.11% of passengers hate it when someone kicks the back of their seat. They equally hate drunk and disruptive passengers, which was something that happened on the Jet2 flight.
