Her MIL said they'd regret their baby's 'terrible' name just 4 days after giving birth. She thought the drama was over — until she entered her home

Just because someone is family doesn't mean they get the right to criticize a parent's choice of name for their child. A new mother who goes by u/bright_cat_688 on Reddit thought the same, but her mother-in-law had other plans. The author and her husband loved the name they chose for their newborn, but when her mother-in-law heard it, she continued making sly remarks about it. Notably, all of it was happening within the first three days after the baby's birth. However, on the fourth day, just as the author thought the drama was over, she entered her home only to find another surprise waiting. The post was shared on August 4, 2026. 

Postpartum drama

During the author's pregnancy, her mother-in-law wanted to pitch in her ideas for her grandchild's name, "or rather wanted to name the baby herself," the new mother explained. But since they did not consult her, she said that the name they chose for their baby had a bad meaning, and that they would have to live with their baby's terrible name. The author was angry by her MIL's remarks, but decided to let it go and focus on her baby. During all this time, her husband and mother remained silent.

MIL meltdown

On the fourth day, the author was discharged from the hospital, and she was ready to go home. Instead of returning to a peaceful environment, her in-laws decided to surprise her with decorations. They shuffled and shifted everything around, including her furniture and curtains. The new mom was pissed but tried to remain calm and not react. 

However, when she went inside her room to feed her baby, she saw her husband was moving back and forth between rooms. He understood his wife's frustration and asked his parents to stay at his brother's place instead. But his parents assumed that the author made him ask them to leave and perceived her as the 'villain.' The mother-in-law began crying, but what made it worse was that she deliberately cried outside the apartment complex too, where everyone could see her. 

Recovery needs compassion

A 2012 study conducted by Rennie Negron on 33 postpartum women (6 to 12 months) found that social support plays a crucial role in helping women with postpartum recovery. Research states that support from family and friends is expected, which made the in-laws' comments and reactions, especially the author's mother-in-law's, particularly hurtful at a time when encouragement would have been more appropriate. Social support is also identified as a key protective factor against postpartum depression. In her post, the new mom also talked about how her husband and her mother refused to step in for her when her MIL was making inappropriate comments about the baby's name, which further added to her stress. 

'Change the locks'

Netizens advised the author to go no-contact with her in-laws and criticized her husband for not standing up for her. For instance, u/rora_borealis commented, "Sounds like they need to be banned from your house. Change the locks. Tell your husband to find a spine." u/SLPreu wrote, "The idea that someone would treat you poorly when you are so fresh in your postpartum is just so insane. I'm so sorry! Do whatever you have to do to protect you and your baby's peace."
