A wedding isn't just about the couple at the altar but also about the guests — the friends and family who carried them through life to get to that room. Xu Chenghong looked around and realized he had almost no one. He had saved 167,500 RMB ($24,772) for his wedding, but the only person on his guest list was his older brother. Terrified of walking into an empty hall on his special day, the orphan threw out a Hail Mary on social media. He didn't think much of it initially, but the internet stepped up. On October 31, an estimated 30,000 strangers flooded Yiliang County in China, carting everything from home appliances to live livestock. They did this just to make sure a lonely groom never stood alone, as reported by Dexerto on November 3, 2026.

A desperate social media plea

It all started when Chenghong meticulously saved money for his big day. However, when he sat down to pen down his guest list, he had no one to invite. Aside from his older brother, his side of the banquet hall was completely empty. That was because when he was just three, his father passed away and his mother remarried. To make matters worse, by the time he was seven years old, his grandmother left too. This left him and his brother to navigate life alone on their own.

Despite that, Chenghong worked multiple odd jobs, eventually saving enough to marry the girl he loved. But now he was facing the heartbreak of celebrating in a ghost town. So, Chenghong posted a raw, candid clip online. In it, he asked strangers to take a seat at his table. "Besides my older brother, there’s been no one else," he explained in the clip. Still, he didn't hope that anyone would show up apart from a handful of sympathetic locals. But he couldn't have been more wrong.

30,000 wedding guests

The internet took it far more seriously than Chenghong anticipated. Days before the ceremony, the area suddenly ground to a halt as roughly 10,000 travelers arrived early from regions as far as Sichuan, Chongqing, and Hong Kong. Local hotels sold out every available room within hours. This caused a massive, unexpected logistical gridlock across the county while handing the neighborhood shopkeepers a wildly lucrative weekend. But this was just the start.

By October 31, the official ceremony date, the crowd rallied past a staggering 30,000 attendees. This effectively transformed a private reception into a show of humanity. Even more so, the guests didn't show up empty-handed. They arrived bearing generous offerings. From crates of fresh apples to household appliances to live cows, ducks, and even the key to a used car. They made sure that Chenghong didn't have to bear any burden, as even 40 freelance chefs made sure everyone was fed.

The town cleans up

Once the plates were cleared and the vows were signed, the massive gathering wrapped up. But before they did, they made sure the town was cleaned. Rather than abandoning the public square in ruins, the thousands of visiting guests organized on the spot, scrubbing down the entire perimeter until the plaza looked untouched. Clips of the spotless aftermath sparked widespread praise across international feeds. Most importantly, it reignited faith in humanity yet again as strangers gathered for an orphan.

The friendship recession

Unfortunately, loneliness is something that has made its way to the United States as well. According to an American Survey Center study, 12% of American adults report having zero close friends. This is quite similar to Chenghong, who didn't have anyone by his side growing up apart from his older brother. What's even more concerning is how much this number has grown in decades. People with no friends make up just 3% of the adult population. This goes to show that, despite globalization, people feel more alone than ever before.

That is exactly why this story struck a chord with people, who were happy to see that so many still care for a stranger. Jwng Goyary wrote under a post by The MES Times, "He expected 10 to 20 people would attend, but thousands showed up. He just wanted to fill the 3 tables to eat together, but 30 tables are waiting. The Chinese people make the impossible possible...kudos to all who joined his wedding; more blessings ahead for you all...to the couple: 'XIN HUN KUAI LE.'" Meanwhile, Alicia YJorge Juarez noted, "All the people who made this groom the happiest man alive deserve a standing ovation."
