Last month, the internet could hardly believe its eyes when the August issue of Vogue magazine — portraying the amazing Simone Biles on the cover — emerged online. Despite being a world leader in fashion and beauty content, the magazine completely missed the mark on photographing the 23-year-old gymnast in a manner that showed off her stunning skin and body. Instead of being an ode to the natural beauty of Black skin, photographer Annie Leibovitz's dull, lifeless snaps of Biles showed yet again how many white photographers don't know the first thing about how to light or frame Black bodies.
