The tradition began in the early '80s and is still going strong after all these years.
A restaurant in Texas has made itself a household name by offering more than what's on the menu. The legendary El Arroyo—which describes itself as "the Last Queso Stop Before a Bunch of Yoga Studios" on its website—has been serving up great Tex-Mex food "with a side of laughs" every day for over 25 years through witty messages on their iconic marquee sign. The entertaining tradition which began in the early '80s is still going strong after all these years, with people all over the world now submitting one-liners in the hopes of making it onto the sign.
Speaking to Bored Panda, Laura Schulte—the brand partnerships and social media manager at El Arroyo—revealed that the marquee was "first put out by the street in front of the restaurant by our original owner over 25 years ago to promote restaurant specials and write funny quotes." Schulte added that since they receive countless message submissions from fans every day, the staff picks what to put up in terms of "what makes us laugh and is most applicable to current events." El Arroyo's signs, which have garnered over 639k followers on Instagram, reportedly attracting customers from all over the country and the world.
The most popular signs, according to Schulte, are usually the ones that are "relatable and funny to large groups of people. We've seen a lot of success with our signs about past elections, and current events such as commentary on the pandemic."
